 The Art of Bauernmalerei

During the 17. century was the first significant period of folk art furniture. This art form flourished in throughout

Europe and I think very strong in parts of Middle Europe. A political border between those various countries

was, from the point of view of folk art forms, nonexistence. The commerce and trade between these countries

let to an intermingling of the folk arts.

It developed not only as a means to express and represent events and various form from the country, historical,

and cultural occurrences, but also as a means of individual artistic expression.

We have 3 sorts of Bauernmalerei producers.

1.) The main producers of Bauernmalerei Furniture were carpenters, turners and cabinetmakers; they not only

made the furniture, but also painted it. Imitation wood graining and stenciling, to the high developed

art of painting folk art ornaments, flowers, folk figures, and country and religious scenes.

Wood graining and marbleizing were predominant parts of decorated furniture. It became very popular

not only for humble farmhouses, but also for distinctive town homes.

2.) During the long cold winter hour farmers had enough time to do work at home and so the used those

hours to be creative, if it was woodcarving or making quilts, painting was very popular.

Well, of course those furniture were used as presents,.. a newborn child, a wedding coming up

      (wedding cabinet), and so on.

3.) At last and not least, was and is still today the folk artist, he got commissioned to paint personalized furniture.

In Bauernmalerei you will find thousands of different styles, every region created there own design and

trademark or the artist with his personal expression, which over time got very popular
